Entrepreneurship 2.0 beta - towards a new era in industrial history

In our book we introduced a new definition for entrepreneurship (check it over here). Entrepreneurship is about adding value to the world and getting back value – at a certain time, in a certain or more ways (for example in terms of money). Entrepreneurship is not especially about running your own business, and it has not much to do with taking risks. It's about living another life... than an ordinairy life... ;)

One and half a year after the release of our book we now come up with the beta-concept of Entrepreneurship 2.0. 21st Century entrepreneuring. A new era in Industrial History? I would like to challenge you to comment, give reading tips or whatever could help to construct the concept of Entrepreneurship 2.0. Thanks already!

Entrepreneurship 2.0
  • is about adding value to the world and getting something in return. Money, authority, respect, appreciation, or a service in return. The more you add, the more you get. The only two things an entrepreneur does is adding value and managing a necessary flow of getting back.
  • is about giving and getting instead of selling and pricing. It's about trust and mutual respect instead of mainly formal agreements and contracts.
  • is about a focus on opportunities and value instead of threads, risks and cutting costs.
  • is about a lifetime learning and developing yourself instead of having finished your degree.
  • is about individuals, not about companies. It's about knowing yourself, self knowledge. It's about choosing yourself. It's about being responsible for yourself and not holding up your hand. Blaim yourself, and reward yourself – even if you are entrepreneuring in a large corporation.
  • is about working together with other entrepreneurs, instead of hiring personel.
  • is about profiting from eachother's strengths and success (partly borrowed from coworking.com) instead of old competition.
  • is about building your own network instead of participating in massive, impersonal, formal networks.
  • is about fun, friends and a good and healthy life instead of working hard for the money and looking out for your pension. And it's about about enjoying a great time instead of showing off.
  • is about a mixing up of your private life en business. Bringing your kids to work or working at your kids' place. It 's about working with your friends, and working together with colleagues as friends. It's about picking your own working hours and practicing sports in the afternoon. It's about working on your holiday and taking holiday three times a year because you're on duty.
  • is about doing things the smart way. Know the rules and change them. Lifehacking, getting things done, guerilla techniques. Focussed, attention on what matters and hit and run. It's about using the web when possible instead of travelling.
  • is about access to goods and sharing not necessarily about owning. It's about an using an ov-fiets in every city instead of reparing your old bike at home. It's about using a Greenwheels car instead of parading with a Jaguar XJ6. It's about open-source instead of patents and copyrights. Hippy 2.0? Communism 2.0? ;)
  • is about being a professional nomad instead of being stuck in an expensive offices. The only thing you need is a Mac, a cellphone, a cup of tea (or coffee).
  • is about wearing comfortable clothes that suit you instead of wearing taylormade suits which don't comfort you.
  • is about producing true products and being yourself instead of shouting and bubbles.
  • is about owner's and co-owner's equity instead of external equity. It's about arranging your money yourself or letting participate business angels instead of being ruled by rude shareholders or borrowing money from a bank.
  • might be applicable especially for 10% of world population. For the creative class, for knowledge workers, for the brained ones. Entrepreneurship 2.0 might be difficult to implement in industries like public transport, logistics, heavy industry, mass production.
Please reflect on my thoughts. Thanks already!

  2. In addition to your list I think (from Dan Pink's Free Agent Nation) Entrepreneurship 2.0 is also about:
+ Freedom; working when, where, how much, under what conditions and for whom you want.
+ Authenticity; the ultimate freedom is the freedom to be one’s self. In Entrepreneurship 2.0 work becomes more fully integrated with who you are.
+ Accountability; puting one’s livelihood and reputation directly on the line as most people want to be held accountable for their work.
+ Self defined succes; as Bob Dylan put it “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and does what he wants to do.”
